funding

Last Updated: 13 April 2022

The following information is a quick reference guide for event planning, covering basic requirements for most Joint Program events. If there are additional policies that apply to your proposed event, the JP Reps will reach out to discuss. Due to the developing nature of COVID protocols, the information below may quickly become out of date, and some events may have restrictions or concerns due to size or location. When in doubt, please reach out or visit now.mit.edu and intranet.whoi.edu/covid19/ for the latest and most complete MIT and WHOI COVID policies.

Please fill out the form here to apply for funding. Some basic guidelines:

  1. Please submit funding at least 2 weeks before your planned event.
  2. If you are currently a JP rep and a group you serve on is applying for funding, you must recuse yourself from that funding discussion.
  3. If your event is limited by nature and you receive more responses, you must allocate spots by random lottery, not first-come first-serve.
  4. No alcohol can be bought with funding allocated by the JP Reps.
  5. Remember, JP Reps funding cannot cover tax. Please work with the treasurer to figure this out.
  6. Please submit photographic evidence once your event is over! We include this in many presentations and in our letter to the OGE Fund every year.
  7. When inviting guest speakers, you must include a resume or CV along with a short paragraph about how you learned of the speaker. All speakers presenting to the JP will be reviewed by the Dean and Associate Dean for consideration.

The Joint Program Student Organization receives funding from a number of sources.

Each year the APO Fund awards us funding for student events.

Several years ago, the needs of JP students were strongly brought to the attention of the MIT Office of Graduate Education. The OGE Fund provided us an annual grant for $10000 to improve student life, hold social events, and increase professional development opportunities in the Joint Program. OGE has graciously renewed this grant each year since.

There is a separate fund for small social events - the WHOI YOU-OI Fun - which funds events by Your Own Initiative.
