Winter meeting planning for tomorrow
Zac will give a budget update:
- Current status of funds (how much we have, how much spend)
- Activities funded so far (photos)
- Encourage people to suggest activities (use it or lose it message)
Thoughts on Open House DEI session:
- Move to later DEI session?
Logan: Survey overview
- Covid impacts:
- Hard time adjusting to life in pandemic, research hinderance
- Difficulty in zoom classes
- Disconnected from classmates, less sense of community
- Mental health: how to present this information?
- Highlight feelings of hopelessness about academic pursuits, ones that APO or reps can do something about
- Extreme anxiety, lowered confidence
- Point out that yellow is not neutral, read off stats as red + yellow
- Colorblind friendly palettes
- Highlight feelings of hopelessness about academic pursuits, ones that APO or reps can do something about
- Considered leaving the Joint Program:
- Affecting pre-generals and post-generals students the same
- Necessary to have a separate plot for pre/post-generals students? Just say it verbally
- Covid extensions:
- Make sure legend is there
- Main point: lots of anxiety about progress in program
- Beneficial for students overall to have guaranteed covid extension
- Be aware that Navy students don’t have option of extension
- General point: covid extensions aren’t a “catch all” solution that is guaranteed to help everyone (e.g. navy, international students), so some groups may need additional consulting
- Common student covid concerns:
- Avoid direct quotes, anything identifiable
- Word cloud of responses?
- Student involvement in DEI:
- Include slide about advisors supporting student DEI efforts or not? Not really useful
- DEI open house session feedback
- Ombuds office: content warning (message in zoom chat) — Zac
- No one doesn’t support getting an ombuds officer
- How important is having an ombuds officer –> have legend, maybe this plot is confusing & not necessary
- Housing & transportation: no plots are really useful, just leave this open as discussion
- What will summer 2021 look like: does APO have any information to share with us
- reopening plans, what for students to expect, how vaccinations will change plans, maybe no information yet
General notes about Winter Meeting:
- Note at the beginning that different groups will have specific challenges (e.g. international students, Navy students)
- Remind everyone that JP reps are a resource to them (at beginning and end of meeting), our meetings are open to everyone
- If students don’t want to speak up about something themselves, can approach a rep or APO
- Send slides out ahead of time
- Release data to students, but retract any potential identifying information
- Remind students to get starbucks food and drink & use rewards points!
International students concerns:
- Stewart: advertise slack channel at beginning of winter meeting
- Add specific international student concerns to the covid concerns slide
Specific Navy concerns:
- Need to gather more information about concerns, will have a separate meeting
Listening session with Peter DeMenecal:
- Share some survey results at that meeting with Peter, make sure a rep attends the listening session perhaps
